Winter Wonderland at Beijing’s Temple of Heaven

While the Temple of Heaven is a marvel to behold throughout the year, visiting during winter adds a unique charm to the experience.

This week Beijing is experiencing it’s first snowfall of the season, so I’ve been trying to soak up as much winter scenery as I can. The early winter is probably my favorite in Beijing – the chances of snow are high, but the temperatures haven’t plummeted too much to make being outside unbearable!

I’ve visited the Temple of Heaven many times throughout the years, and had to visit again to see the snowfall on this iconic Beijing site. Come with me on a winter walk around the Temple of Heaven!

About the Temple of Heaven

Constructed during the Ming Dynasty in 1420, the Temple of Heaven, or “Tiantan” in Chinese, was originally a sacred site used by emperors to perform elaborate ceremonies, particularly the annual ritual of praying for a good harvest. The complex comprises three main structures: the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests, the Imperial Vault of Heaven, and the Circular Mound Altar.
