McDonald’s Smart Cars at Select Beijing Subway Stations: A Quick Bite on the Go

In an exciting development for Beijing’s commuters, McDonald’s has introduced Smart Cars within select subway stations. These eye-catching Smart Cars are decorated in McDonald’s signature red and yellow colors and offer a convenient dining experience right on the go.

According to Beijing Daily, these McDonald’s smart dining cars actually popped up in March 2023, but I just recently noticed one on my usual commute path in December 2023 in Beijing. It seems they are rolling them out slowly and selectively at certain stations.

And of course, I wanted to see how it worked!

Menu and Pricing

There are several meals available throughout the day, including breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea, and dinner options. McDonalds workers bring food packages during different times of the day to refill the car and the car keeps the food warm.

Breakfast options include:

  • McMuffins
  • Porridge
  • Coffee
  • Soy milk

Items are priced between 12.5 to 20.5 yuan.

How To Use The McDonald’s Food Cars

  • Scan the QR code on the car using WeChat or Alipay
  • Select the menu item you want
  • After payment, the compartment door unlocks for easy meal retrieval.

Operating Hours:

  • Smart Cars operate from 7:30 am to 7:30 pm.

Where to Find McDonald’s Smart Cars in Beijing:

  • Line 7 Shuangjing Station
  • Line 6 Chaoyangmen Station
  • Changping Line Xierqi Station
  • Jintaixijiao Station line 10

There are likely even more stations than these now! Have you seen them anywhere else or around other cities in China?

Trying the McDonald’s Food Car

To me, honestly the taste wasn’t much different to how it would be if I ordered McDonald’s by delivery. It also helps that it’s just sandwiches and not hash browns or French Fries that would taste more soggy if sat for awhile.

Overall, I thought it was an interesting and convenient option to try, especially if you’re in a rush and hungry!
