Welcome to this month’s roundup of the eats, drinks, activities, and events I did in Beijing in August 2023.

My monthly recaps give you a slice of expat life in Beijing, covering everything from historical hutong cafes, traditional Beijing sites, and delicious Chinese cuisines, to downtown rooftop bars, international restaurants, expat activities, and more.

This month’s list is a little shorter than previous ones as I had two trips outside of Beijing, first to Jiangxi and then to Chongqing and Guizhou. I also celebrated 8 years in China this month!

  1. 1901 Cafe
  2. Beibingyang: Beijing’s Iconic Orange Soda
  3. Ichibangai First Avenue in Maizidian: Japanese Restaurants GALORE!
  4. Beijing National Center for the Performing Arts 国家大剧院
  5. Beijing CBD Beer Fest
  6. Business Collaboration Requests

As always, make sure to follow me on Instagram and WeChat channels for more videos and updates on life in China.

1901 Cafe

Beibingyang: Beijing’s Iconic Orange Soda

If you come to Beijing, you’ve gotta try this local Beijing soda called Beibingyang 北冰洋. It tastes similar to Orange Fanta, and is perfect on a hot Beijing day.

Ichibangai First Avenue in Maizidian: Japanese Restaurants GALORE!

A strip of Japanese bars and restaurants west of Solana and Chaoyang Park. If you know Tokyo Lounge it’s part of this area, but I had never spent time at the other restaurants around this area! It’s also by this funky 7/11.

Must try: Vin Vino, a Japanese tapas fusion bar with an extensive Wine Cabinet.

Address: Ichiban Street, Zaoying Beili 15, North Nongzhanguan Road, Chaoyang District 朝阳区农展馆北路枣营北里15号

Beijing National Center for the Performing Arts 国家大剧院

I’ve been in Beijing 5 years and can’t believe it’s the first time I’ve been here to see a performance! There was an Inner Mongolia Youth Choir Concert performing and it was lovely to see them in this beautiful venue. There are a host of other performances, exhibitions, and concerts held here as well.

Beijing CBD Beer Fest

So I missed this event in Beijing when I was traveling, but all my friends went and had a great time, so I wanted to mention it! If you visit Beijing or are moving here, it’s always a good idea to check the Beijinger to see what events and festivals are going on.

Business Collaboration Requests

Are you a business in Beijing or China wanting to collaborate? I’ve worked with many restaurants, hotels, bars, event groups, and more to create Instagram reels, WeChat channel videos, WeChat moment posts, and more! I have an extensive international Beijing & China network that is eager to learn about new and interesting events, foods, and drinks happening in the city. Add my WeChat: rachelweiss22
