Beijing Blanketed in the First Snowfall of December 2023

The first snowfall of the winter is always a magical moment that completely enraptures Beijingers. We all go outside, snap photos and videos, and share across our WeChat moments and group chats to spread the news: Beijing snow is here!

I’ve had many memorable moments in the Beijing snow. In 2019, I visited Jinshanling Great Wall for a snowy morning sunrise. In 2021, Beijing snow came early on November 7, and I ran over to the Forbidden City northeast Corner turret to snap some pics.

This year the first snowfall happened in the early hours of December 11. I decided to head into the hutongs in the late afternoon to catch a glimpse of some Beijing winter scenery!

Here’s a walk around the Lama Temple and the Wudaoying Hutongs. I stopped inside Phoenix Cafe, a Wudaoying Hutong with a lovely rooftop where I could enjoy a hot mulled wine and witness some cute hutong cats playing outside!

And enjoy this hutong cat video ( watch on Instagram):

It’s forecasted we’ll have more snow by tomorrow and Thursday, I can’t wait!
